Ricadi
Ricadi is situated at the feet of Mount Poro plateau that stretches between Briatico and Tropea, bedded on the promontory whose vertex is Capo Vaticano (whose literal translation is "Cape of prophecy", as traditional folklore tells of the existence of on oracle, kept in a cave among the rocks of the headland, which was consulted by sailors before embarking on the perilous crossing of Scilla and Cariddi, to ask for information on the difficulties they might meet), Various excavations campaigns in the area of Ricadi brought to light many archaeological findings. Ricadi is a prehistoric site and was occupied by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Locrese, Romans, Byzantine and Normans, Saracens (who burnt everything they did not take with them), Angevines, the Dukes of Aragon and France and the Bourbons.
Other historical facts can be found in the area of Formicoli (Forum Herculis, where the mighty demigod Hercules, returning from Spain with his herds, found abundant willows) and in the small hamlet of Brivadi where they both discovered a Byzantine necropolis, as well as along the coastline where numerous watchtowers against Turkish incursions can be seen.
Ricadi and Capo Vaticano, from where you can admire the Eolian Islands, are among the most picturesque spots of the whole of Calabria and popular destinations for tourists who love serene holidays in the middle of a natural scenery of fruit trees, sparkling sunshine, crystal-clear Sea, beaches of fine white sand and black rocks, and who are placed in the numerous and well equipped campsites, holiday apartments and hotels.
Places of interest in the municipality of Ricadi:
In Brivadi you can visit the watchtower "Torre Marrana", unfortunately meanwhile reduced to its foundations. This watchtower received signals of nearby watchtower "Torre Ruffa" and sent them to other towers along the coast to finally warn in a chain reaction the Castle of Monteleone, today’s Vibo Valentia.
The Museum of the Rural Civilization (Museo della Civiltà Contadina) preserves testimonials of rural civilization and working tools used in the fields.
In the small fraction of Lampazzone, you can visit a still working water mill built in 1700.
The owner, Mr. Giuseppe Rizzo, is pleased to show all interested visitors the once applied operating mode.
The mill can be visited in the period from 1 June to 30 September, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 8 am to 8 pm.
